A Substack Friends Zine
because you're all pretty amazing
This is a mini-zine I sent to paid subscribers who signed up for New Year’s snail mail, but it applies to everyone I’ve connected with here. It truly is a marvel to interact with so many people across so many miles. Thanks to all of you for being here, for your comments and community, for your art and words. You help me sharpen my (metaphorical) ax! The worse things get out in the world, the more I appreciate all of you.
Here’s a bit more about process and snowflakes...
The upcoming dates and links for zoom hangouts for paid subscribers can be found here. This year we’re focused on Thinking Small to tackle our Big Projects.
Thanks for reading The Habit of Art by Kelcey Ervick, a Substack Featured Publication (twice!). I love writing and drawing these posts and am grateful to everyone who follows along. I’m the author of four books including the graphic memoir The Keeper (Avery/Penguin Random House). I’m a professor of creative writing in Indiana, and I live on the STILL very snowy banks of the St. Joseph River.

p.s. Here’s a comic I shared earlier this week on National Girls & Women in Sports Day. In which my grown-up self breaks it to my younger self that I didn’t get to become a wide receiver like Lynn Swann on the Pittsburgh Steelers, which I dreamed about—but that I did publish some books, including one about growing up playing competitive sports (thanks to Title IX!).
The collage style was inspired by Mira Jacob’s graphic memoir, Good Talk. I made this as a demo to show my students how to do it.

oh how cute! I don't think I've seen this in my mailbox yet. But just getting your Substack newsletters is a treat. Happy Gal-entine's Day!
Lovely work from a lovely heart!
