Define your New Year's...Era
Save your year from the fate of Ophelia.
Is anyone else working on a Big Project this year? I’ll share my self-imposed syllabus and other parts of my journey here. But I’ve also been thinking that I might go deeper into breaking down a big project in my monthly zoom hangouts for paid subscribers? And maybe even offer a separate, exclusive year-long class/workshop with monthly meetings for a small group of folks who want to put time (and money) into working on big projects together? Would love your thoughts, and would love to hear what ERA you’re in!
Miscellany
Here’s my post from last year about choosing a New Year’s Imperative: “Forget resolutions and words of the year. Choose a New Year’s Imperative instead.”
Paid subscribers, your snowflake snail mail is coming soon! (If you signed up.)
At my other Substack, Letters to Dead Authors & Artists, I published a letter to Charles Schulz on Christmas day, and for New Year’s Day a letter to . . . God.
Do you have a big (book) project that’s already complete? I’m judging a book contest for fiction or creative nonfiction manuscripts. The deadline has been extended until 1/20/26. More info here.
Thanks for reading The Habit of Art by Kelcey Ervick, a Substack Featured Publication (twice!). I love writing and drawing these posts and am grateful to everyone who follows along. I’m an award-winning author of four books including the graphic memoir The Keeper. I’m a professor of creative writing at Indiana University South Bend, and I live on the snowy banks of the St. Joseph River.

Kelcey, you're just great!
Your posts always offer such a generous dose of inspiration. I am definitely curious about creating a self-imposed syllabus and would appreciate any tips you want to share on how to break down bigger projects into smaller steps!
