My graphic memoir tells more of my story of growing up as a girl athlete and becoming a writer/professor: The Keeper: Soccer, Me, and the Law That Changed Women’s Lives.
I have a comic celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX in the Washington Post. It is also at The Lily News on Instagram.
This week’s inspiration: Tom Hart
Probably many of you in the creative world know Tom Hart—cartoonist, philosopher, mentor, teacher, SAW founder, friend, and father. I wept and marveled all through his graphic memoir, Rosalie Lightning, about the sudden death of his young daughter. His thoughtful and vulnerable approach teaching shines through in his wonderful The Art of the Graphic Memoir. His current ongoing project, B. Is Dying, takes on nothing less than our personal and societal belief systems. I love what he says about those myths on the final page of the third issue:
Here’s a peek at how he comments on today’s world by situating it in a prehistoric/post-apocalyptic scene:

Keeper notes
Tom was also kind enough to say this about THE KEEPER:
I am so glad to have read this marvelous book. I loved drinking in the paintings, and am so in awe of Ervick's artistry, and her amazing story as an athlete and writer, but also The Keeper helped me comprehend more deeply the women who organized and fought (and played soccer and took a knee) for rights and justice in our time.
Wow! I love this newsletter! And I love the photo of us. But mostly I love you and am so very proud to be your dad.
So glad you reposted this! I was on the Title IX committee (they needed student athletes) in college. Living through the 70s and 80s, I feel the same way. Field hockey came to us in 9th grade. That ended up being my jam and taking me all sorts of places. Thankful to have grown up post 1972! I'm a 1974 baby.
