Love this, Kelcey. That Didion quote is so perfect. I blogged too, but my really personal writing was more often (and pre-blog) contained in my journal. I noticed after my first marriage ended that I wasn’t journaling as often, and it heats up even now when I’m wrestling with negative, stressful situations - because I’m trying to figure out how I’m feeling and work through the options and ways to manage. When I’m happy, there’s nothing to process.
I hear you, Laurie. Blogs and journals are two very different outlets, obviously, because of the public v. private nature. Both are great for working out feelings and ideas in different ways. As I made the shift to creative nonfiction, I needed to practice writing toward an audience. But yes, I've noticed a similar pattern with me of frantic journaling and morning pages writing when I'm more feeling more stressed and negative. Gotta get it out! xo
