Yeah, I worried about getting too literal with ships and going underboard, but I thought of it more as a cozy space away from the main action. And the expression "going overboard" is already a weird one for overdoing something!
Above board, side board, and never bored. Your hair chaotically scrunched by the headboard? What a fun time watching you think/make art. Kind of the same thing in this case.
Literally just listened to the podcast on hidden brain about “Do Less” for the second time. It’s such a powerful rethink for me. Same wavelength over here.
Thanks, Viveca! "Going overboard" means doing something excessively, but I don't know why! Doing too much is like going over the side of a ship? It's strange, but that is the expression. So I thought it would be fun to imagine going "underboard," hiding away from the main action.
Your work is so beautiful and your colors are deep. I love it. I want to know more about underboard. Also the first board that came to mind was cheese board, so I think I am hungry, too. Enjoy football (a game I purposefully avoid learning about, but LOVE the fanning that happens.)
Thanks, Tina! The black line was done with a Posco marker--they are acrylic paint markers that allow you to do detailed lines like that. I worry it looks a little too "markery" but I wanted a bold clean line. You can see the marker in the top left of the final image, but the brand name is facing away.
Hi Kelcey. Thanks for this. I'm always giving advice that I can't follow as well, haha. I have to know... when you wrote "I put a bird on it", were you referencing a Portlandia episode from years ago? If not, here is said episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHmLljk2t8M&ab_channel=EricCost
Beautiful artwork and text. I appreciate the unconditional encouragement, Kelcey Ervick. I’ve thought about this with minimalism and maximalism. Sometimes we are called to go overboard or underboard. God bless!
hahaha I love it! Overboard, underboard...both have their place...
Haha, agreed! Thanks, Amy!
Hmmmmmm. Underboard sounds sneaky. So I’m for it. Civil disobedience is underboard. But so were slave galleys. Time to rise up!
Sneaky as in subversive, right?

Ooh, I love this extension of the word play! ❤️💃
That'll teach you to invite a poet into the substack house. :)

Cool, thanks for sharing, Carlie! Will check it out!
Your letters are a breath of fresh air, Kelcey. Thank you.
Oh thank you, Carol! 🥰
I like the idea, but does it mean something significant in english? The picture is special. 🎨☕️

Ahhhh CHEESE BOARD! I should have thought of that! I could stick to that! Yes football is fun for fanning! Thanks, Jane!
Well this is extremely relatable. Ha.
Lol, that's good to hear it's not just me! 😂
Love this artwork so much. Can I ask about your process—specifically, the black line work—what do you use for that? It’s so vivid!

So wise, so engaging. Love it!🙌🩷
I think it’s wise even if I can’t quite do it myself! 😂 Thanks, Jane!
I absolutely love your artwork.
Thank you. That means so much! ❤️❤️❤️

Oh yes, I was referencing it! 😂
Oh good, LOLOLOLOLOLOL!
Agreed!
Omg you are the mirror of me. I totally get this. Thank you 🙏🏻😍
Yay, kindred spirits! ❤️
I love this so much! That artwork, wow. I often suck at going underboard too, but it's a nice thought now and then. Thank you for sharing, Kelcey.
Haha, thanks, Pauline! It is a nice THOUGHT. 😂 Ah well!
