A Solstice Reset
With help from friends and familiars
In conclusion! I’m continuing with my New Year’s Imperative to Think Small, which will include 10-minute daily drawings, but I’m doing a general reset: 1. Cleaning my studio/office. 2. Instead of thinking I have to decide HOW to tell the story, I’m going to do a bunch of “tiny experiments” (I have the book but haven’t read it yet) to see where it leads. 3. I’ll focus on going deeper into WHAT story I’m telling and WHY. 4. More friends and family.
Happy Father’s Day to my awesome dad, and shout-out to all the girl-dads: Father’s Day often lands around the anniversary of Title IX (signed by President NIXON on June 23, 1972), and which, along with my dad, led to my life in sports. Here’s a short post I wrote a few years ago that begins, “I grew up handling a lot of balls.”
Check out Andy J. Pizza’s Creative Pep Talk Episode 560.
Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement, Jennie Nash! I’m already back to doing your Blueprint for a Memoir.
Paid subscribers! I will have my next set of monthly hangout dates posted soon. I’m also planning travels for July and will be making postcards to mail to you. Stay tuned to sign up.
Is anyone else watching the World Cup?
Thanks for reading The Habit of Art by Kelcey Ervick, a Substack Featured Publication (twice!). I love writing and drawing these posts and am grateful to everyone who follows along. I’m the author of four award-winning books, including the graphic memoir The Keeper, which is about the impact of Title IX on my life (and yours!). I’m a professor of creative writing in Indiana, and I live on the banks of the St. Joseph River.

Happy Solstice to Kelcey and all! My Big Project timeline got thrown out the window when I had to have two eye surgeries in April that left me homebound and without the ability to read or write for two months. My version of going small was to do artwork in natural light, and I was able to complete 18 pieces for an upcoming show at a time when I could not tolerate backlit devices. I ordered Jennie's book and am hoping to start a memoir in essays in July.
I really like Andy J. Pizza's podcasts. He's so likeable as a person, and always has interesting ideas and suggestions. Happy Solstice!
