“This process of reflection and explanation can offer clarity to the artist themselves, as well as to their audience.” -
I probably need TWO one-sentence artist statements
I’ll stop there for now, but there’s a whole secondary aspect of my work that may require its own one-sentence artist statement, which is what this newsletter is all about: my shift toward visual storytelling, my experience of making art a habit, and my mission to get as many people as possible doing it too. :)
I’ve been thinking about revisiting my tagline for The Habit of Art, which currently says: “An illustrated newsletter by Kelcey Ervick about writing, drawing, and storytelling as radical acts (that look a lot like sitting at a desk).” But I also like it.
Do you have a tagline/mission statement/one-sentence artist? Feel free to share or test one out in the comments!

Thanks for reading The Habit of Art by Kelcey Ervick, an illustrated newsletter about writing, drawing, and storytelling as radical acts (that look a lot like sitting at a desk). I love writing and drawing these posts and am grateful to everyone who follows along! I am author of four books, including the graphic memoir, The Keeper. Inspired by my own shift toward visual storytelling, I co-edited (with Tom Hart) The Field Guide to Graphic Literature, which is about making all kinds of comics, graphic poetry, and literary collage.
And then, there's the screenplay logline: "A multi-talented Midwest author-artist-professor, who struggles with her creative identity, is challenged by her father to define her work. She realizes that her central subject has been badass women who are treated badly, and deepens her bond with her dad.
I love it! Thanks! And you are one badass woman of whom I am extremely proud! Love ❤️ you!
